Estela

A film directe by Liliana Díaz Castillo

In development

Estela, a Colombian woman, tries to make her way with her daughter Sofía in Barcelona, the city she migrated to a few months ago. Silenced by her status as an illegal, Estela must hide an episode of abuse she suffered while working as a domestic employee. She wants to go to the police, but is afraid she’ll be arrested. Only fantasy and the love of her daughter Sofia give her the strength to fight against fear and precariousness. She gets support from other women who, like her, are fighting for their survival and dignity.

“The writing was inspired by the lives of the members of the Colectivo Micaela, who participated in the research process for the film. Colectivo Micaela is a self-managed group of mostly Latin American migrant women, the majority of whom work as domestic and care workers. They helped me to organically understand the essential questions of the story, the character’s drives, fears and struggles, which gave strength and meaning to her journey and revealed the different forms of oppression in her context. During this process, I intuitively structured a methodology with which I feel completely comfortable because it brings together the essential elements for me. To understand how they want to be represented and, using their codes, recreate a universe that tells a poetic, subtle, moving, but above all political story.”
